Yoshima: Interview with the developer (DEMO BUILD this Friday)

This week we will release the first demo build of our recently announced game Yoshima: Hentai Simulator. Our whole team at TopHouse is excited about it, and so far the game has already gained over 21,000 wishlists! This is a great result for Yoshima, and we honestly didn't expect that players enjoyed the concept of the game so much.

In this post today, we'll share the questions and answers that we asked to the developer of this game - Sugureta - when we took him to the publishing house. The developer is very well-mannered and nice in our feelings. We would be very happy if this post inspires anyone to develop their own game!

Question β„–1: When did you come up with the idea to develop a game and how long have you been in development?

The idea to make Yoshima came to me in 2023. I was looking for genres of games where I could realize something interesting with limited resources. Thus the idea for this game was born. Active development has been going on since spring 2024, but the first steps started a year ago.

Question β„–2: Why did you want to make your own game at all?

I came to game development during covid when I had more free time. I started to explore my options and concluded that making my own games would build my career in the future.

Question β„–3: Why did you choose the concept of a visual novel + dating sim? Also why the roommate based format?

I think that for NSFW games, the interactive visual novel is the most beneficial concept of all genres, since the essence of the game is about the character, artwork, and dialogues. Meanwhile, the gameplay should subtly enhance all of these. But I think I'll definitely try new genres in the future.

Question β„–4: Why did you choose Yoshima as the name for female character in your game?

I googled an anime name generator and took the first name that appeared and it sounded cool.

Question β„–5: Did you have any references of other games of similar genre, or anime/manga and anything like that?

Yes, the main references were the Cat`s Kiss and Her New Memory games. Well realized products that inspired me to develop my own game.

Question β„–6: Who have you got on your team?

I have an artist, a programmer and an animator on my team.

Question β„–7: What game engine are you using? Why did you choose this engine?

We make the game on Unity. I consider it the best solution for β€œsimple” projects, because it is very flexible and you can realize any idea with less tricks.

Question β„–8: What is the hardest thing for you to develop this game?

Since this is the first project, we don't have enough expertise and experience at some points, and we are developing it with limited resources (I only asked for marketing from the publisher, and I'm managing all the development costs myself). Perhaps this is the main difficulty.

Question β„–9: What would you like to develop in the future, what do you aspire to?

In the future I would like to make full 3D (or even VR) story games. Probably in anime style too =)

Question β„–10: There will be those among the readers of this post who also want to make their own game. What is your advice to them?

I think the most important thing is to just start making a game. Any kind, even if it's going to be β€œnot great” in anyone's opinion. If you can't take it out, then cut everything you can and release it as is.
